Intraspecific size shifts in generalist bumblebees and flowers lead to low functional consequences

چکیده

Abstract Body size is a trait that can affect plant–pollinator interaction efficiency and plant reproductive success. We explored the impact of intraspecific shifts on interactions between pollinators flowering plants under controlled conditions. considered two development conditions leading to production large small individual flowers Borago officinalis Echium plantagineum . also used natural variability worker within bumblebee colonies isolate workers. performed fully crossed experiment with flower sizes each species Our results show both partners did not bee foraging behavior in most evaluated parameters were equally efficient depositing pollen. Significant differences found only pollen deposition across life B. , greatest quantity deposited by bees. find relationship pollinator fitness. suggest generalist may be resilient future potential mismatches but remain tested if they are still new environmental resulting from global changes.

Eco-energetic consequences of evolutionary shifts in body size.

Size imposes physiological and ecological constraints upon all organisms. Theory abounds on how energy flux covaries with body size, yet causal links are often elusive. As a more direct way to assess the role of size, we used artificial selection to evolve the phytoplankton species Dunaliella tertiolecta towards smaller and larger body sizes. Within 100 generations (c. 1 year), we generated a f...

Frontal injury: impairments of fundamental processes lead to functional consequences.

Frontal functions, or impairments, have achieved the status of pornography: everyone knows them when they see them, but there is little agreement on their exact defining properties. Patients with frontal lobe lesions have impairments in planning, monitoring, sequencing, and inhibiting responses. They cannot organize complex behaviors. They are somehow simultaneously unaware and distractible, ir...

Bumblebees avoid flowers containing evidence of past predation events

Bees are at risk of predation from flower-dwelling ambush predators. Since these predators tend to be cryptic, bees trying to mitigate predation risk may need to make use of indirect cues of the predator’s presence. For example, they may use cues of past predation events as indirect cues of current predation risk. I conducted a series of experiments that examined how bumblebees (genus Bombus La...

Functional consequences of microbial shifts in the human gastrointestinal tract linked to antibiotic treatment and obesity

The microbiomes in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of individuals receiving antibiotics and those in obese subjects undergo compositional shifts, the metabolic effects and linkages of which are not clearly understood. Herein, we set to gain insight into these effects, particularly with regard to carbohydrate metabolism, and to contribute to unravel the underlying mechanisms and consequences fo...

Social Learning in Bumblebees (Bombus impatiens): Worker Bumblebees Learn to Manipulate and Forage at Artificial Flowers by Observation and Communication within the Colony

Social learning occurs when one individual learns from another, mainly conspecific, often by observation, imitation, or communication.Using artificial flowers, we studied social learning by allowing test bumblebees to (a) see dead bumblebees arranged in foraging positions or (b) watch live bumblebees actually foraging or (c) communicate with nestmates within their colony without having seen for...
